PayPal’s president David Marcus has said he believes NFC will fail to gain mass adoption in 2013, and that the cash register will go mobile.
Marcus’s other predictions for the coming year, published on the company’s blog, were that loyalty and couponing businesses will converge in the digital wallet, and that location-based shopping technology will change customers’ retail experience.
A central theme with the blog was the notion that competitors were misunderstanding a customer’s needs, a point Marcus stressed from the start: "At PayPal we have an end-to-end view of the industry that others don’t and I would argue that payments at point of sale alone is not a problem that needs to be solved.
"The real opportunity for technology is to solve deep customer needs in new ways. That’s what PayPal did 14 years ago when it allowed all of us to purchase items quickly and easily online."
Recently, PayPal announced that it was trialling two new payment systems in the bricks-and-mortar retail environment. One pilot trialled in Amsterdam used QR codes to facilitate out of hours online shopping and another in piloted in Australia was a POS mobile wallet payment system.
