New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has introduced a new tap-to-pay fare system called OMNY.
A contactless payment system, OMNY will enable commuters to pay fares utilising their contactless credit, debit, or reloadable prepaid card, mobile phone or wearable.
In order to make payments, riders have to hold their smartphone or credit card up to the turnstile reader.
The move enables commuters to use Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay or Fitbit Pay for their MTA ride.
Initially, commuters can use the technology for Staten Island buses.
The technology can currently also be used on 4 5 6 lines between Grand Central-42 Street and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr.

By GlobalDataPlans are on for a broader roll out of the service next year.
Contactless transit has been already launched in other US markets including Portland and Chicago.
Commenting on the service, MTA said: “Until late 2020, when it’s available throughout the entire subway system and on all bus routes, you’ll only be able to use OMNY on a full-fare, pay-per-ride basis.
“We’ll add more fare options, including time-based passes, reduced fares, student fares, and more, at that point.”
“OMNY honours the same free transfers between subway stations and buses as MetroCard, as long as those locations are OMNY-enabled,” MTA added.
