Users can create an account by providing their personal details, Up Romania card number, a pin code, and a selfie.

Using the face-scanning feature, app users can pay up to RON30 ($7).

For transactions of a greater amount, payments can be authorized once the user provides a security PIN.

Payments are processed via the Romanian online card payment processor EuPlatesc’s platform.

Once the transaction is complete, a receipt is sent to both the customer and the merchant over email.

Up Romania general manager Elena Pap said: “Up Romania has committed to a broad digitization process meant to offer our customers a simplified experience in using the cards issued by our company.

“In addition to creating opportunities for online payments in as many stores as possible, we also want them to have at hand fast and safe means of payment.

“Therefore, our customers can now pay by phone via Apple Pay, without their phone, via PayByFace and shall soon be able to carry out direct payments from their Up Mobil app, through an Up Romania developed e-wallet.”

PayByFace intends to equip over 500 Romanian stores with biometric payment technologies by the end of 2021.

The company aims to deploy selfie payments at 100 locations in Bucharest and other cities.

Internationally, PayByFace plans to ink partnership agreements with establishments in Bulgaria, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, UK, and Italy.
