Chinese payment platform Alipay has announced it has become the largest mobile payment provider in the world based on the number of users and transaction volume.
According to their latest statistics, the company had nearly 300m registered users at the end of 2013, including over 100m who access services via mobile phones. Alipay said users completed more than 2.78bn transactions on Alipay Wallet during the year.
Specifically, in November and December 2013, an average of 12m payments were made through Alipay’s mobile services every day and the number has shot up to 18m since the beginning of this year, according to the company.
Alipay said its active mobile usership has surpassed its US competitor Paypal since the second quarter last year totaling over CNY900bn ($150bn) in payments volume.
By the end of 2013, 500m Chinese people were accessing the Internet via mobile phones, accounting for 81% of the country’s internet users, according to the China Internet Network Information Center.
