MTN and Visa have partnered to allow MTN customers to pay through Visa, with a launch in Ghana planned for the end of the year.
Under the scheme, users of MTN Mobile Money will be able to pay with their smartphones at any Visa POS or online at any Visa merchant. They will also be able to withdraw money from their MTN Mobile Money account at Visa ATMs.
Visa’s head of global mobile network operator partnerships, Vish Sowani, said: "We are delighted to launch this exciting new service with MTN. This is significant as we look to extend the benefits of electronic payments to mobile money services in Africa.
"Visa recognises that mobile technology is the single most significant driver of financial inclusion and improving access to financial services is a critical building block to help more people improve their lives."
The scheme will be launched first in Ghana before being rolled out to the other 21 countries that MTN operates in across Africa, Asia and the Middle East. MTN Mobile Money is available in 13 of those 22 countries.
Sowani said:"We look forward to building on this broad based partnership with MTN to bring further innovative payment related products to their customers in the future."
