Mastercard and Net 1 UEPS Technologies’ subsidiary EasyPay have formed an alliance. Their goal is to enable cashless payments for prepaid utility services in South Africa.

Under the arrangement, Mastercard’s digital payment service Masterpass will be available on the new EasyPay Mobile app.

Moreover, customers can use the integrated solution to buy prepaid utility services. Furthermore, customers can pay their accounts from nearly 600 bill issuers.

EasyPay

The firm processes around 1.3 million account payment transactions per month. It does this for more than 40 traffic authorities, 80 municipalities and 460 bill issuers such as insurance organisations.

Recently, the firm aggregated all these billers into a mobile application.

Now, customers can also pay an account or top-up by entering their card details on the Masterpass app.

Mastercard division president for southern Africa Mark Elliott said: “The EasyPay Mobile app frees South Africans from the need to stand in a queue at a physical store or log-on to internet banking to settle their accounts.

“Now they can pay for an extensive range of services and utilities from a single app, anywhere, anytime they want.”

Net 1 managing director of southern Africa Nanda Pillay said: “Consumers are rapidly embracing technology, and are looking for new ways to use it to simplify their lives.

“We launched the EasyPay Mobile app as a one-stop shop to make it as easy as possible for people to pay their bills with something that is already in their pockets – their smartphones.”
