UnionPay International has unveiled a new open, application programming interface (API) platform called UPI Developer.

In the first phase, the platform will offer open access to 18 of UnionPay’s cross-border mobile Internet payment products and services.

Developers will be able to use the APIs to incorporate UnionPay’s technical services into their products. This will increase the payment scenarios and services available for UnionPay card users.

QR code acceptance, in-app Apple Pay, secure online payment methods and tokenisation service are some of the APIs on the platform.

UnionPay International CEO Cai Jianbo said: “UnionPay International is accelerating building up its innovative payment technology and service capacity, and promoting the digitalisation of its card-based business, to support the development of mobile payment.”

Through UPI Developer, UnionPay is offering a combination of different APIs. This will provide ‘one-stop’ payment solutions for its partners and aid in product development and commercial application.

The open platform will also provide multiple technical support services such as documentation, guidance, product testing and certification.

UnionPay noted that the API platform can be leveraged by issuers, acquirers, merchants, software developers and mobile phone operators.

UPI Developer will offer online services, including product information, development and testing, for issuers and acquirers.

UnionPay plans to create a complete system structure in the future for its partners. This in turn will enhance the efficiency and flexibility of applying its products and payment scenarios.

The company also intends to expand its collaborations in the industry to optimise card services globally.
