UnionPay International has expanded its alliance with processing services provider Worldline to bring the acceptance of its cards to additional 46,000 merchant locations across Europe.
The expanded deal covers shopping malls, duty-free shops, supermarkets and public transportations across the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

It will increase UnionPay’s acceptance rate in Belgium from 50% to 90%. The merchant coverage in the Netherlands will reach more than 80%, while overall acceptance rate in Luxembourg will become nearly 100%.
Worldline card acceptance
The deepened alliance will also enable UnionPay mobile QuickPass acceptance at point-of-sale terminals. Cardholders can use this payment service for contactless payments via their mobile phones.
China UnionPay president Shi Wenchao said: “UnionPay is strengthening its collaboration with major institutions in Europe in card acceptance, and is attaching greater significance to acceptance optimization in key sectors related to free-and-independent traveling, so as to better meet the demands of free-and-independent travellers to Europe.
“In the next step, with the mobilisation of the payment industry in Europe, UnionPay will update its collaboration mode with Worldline to carry out in-depth cooperation in spheres of mobile payments and financial infrastructures, to promote the localisation of UnionPay’s business in Europe.”

UnionPay is currently accepted across more than 90% European countries and regions. The company is also offering services to local customers, including card issuance in Portugal.
