IDEX Biometrics has received two patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for its unconnected on-card enrolment on biometric smart cards.
These patents cover methods and devices that allow a person to enroll his/her finger through an unconnected device.
IDEX’s autonomous solution comprises a small receptacle with an embedded power source, which can be shipped in the post.
To enroll fingerprints on a smart card, the user needs to insert the card into the enrolment receptacle and touch the fingerprint sensor area on the card several times.
The technology eliminates any possibility of external interference as card is not connected to any other device or network throughout the enrollment process.
IDEX Biometrics chief innovation officer Fred Benkley said: “We are extremely pleased to have been granted these broad patents in the US and we also have a number of international patents pending for global coverage. This is an important part of IDEX’s competitive strategy to provide complete end-to-end biometric solutions.

By GlobalData“There’s no need to involve any other device, no apps, no wireless pairing and no compatibility problems to worry about. Our enrollment invention not only addresses privacy concerns, it potentially aids financial inclusion by offering a cost-effective, practical solution for developing countries. We expect unconnected enrollment will champion over connected methods.”
IDEX noted that its biometric sensors are compatible with both unconnected and connected enrolment methods.
Apart from the two granted patents, IDEX is awaiting patents for this technology in several other jurisdictions as well.
