Vodafone India, in partnership with ICICI Bank, has launched the M-Pesa mobile payment service in Delhi, India’s second city.

ICICI Bank, India’s second largest by assets, and Vodafone India launched the service in December 2012.

The service is available in Kolkata, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Rajasthan and now Delhi. Delhi, with a population of 16 million people is the forth largest city in the world.

The company plans to roll out the service to Mumbai, India’s biggest city with a population of 18 million, and Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state, in the coming days. It is to be rolled out across the country in 12 to 18 months.

M-Pesa is a mobile money transfer and payment service, first launched in Kenya in March 2007. It allows users to pay utility bills, top up mobile phones, send funds to bank accounts, transfer money to mobile phones and deposit and withdraw cash at over 8,000 M-Pesa agents.
