Stripe, the outfit that integrates payments platforms with online sellers, has launched in the UK.

The start-up has crossed the Atlantic following its set up in Canada in September 2012.

UK merchants Teddle, Virgin Pure and Thread have been testing Stripe’s product over several months.

Companies already using Stripe’s service already number in their thousands, with FourSquare and Shopify among them.

UK businesses will be able integrate Stripe’s platform to their websites and apps in order to receive payments.

A UK-based developer at Stripe, Andy Young, said the expansion would not compromise Stripe’s offering to merchants. "UK users get the same instant activation that we provide in the US and Canada," he said.

"We support all major card types, including American Express. You retain complete control over your payment experience. And, as ever, it’s all covered by simple, flat pricing," he added.

Merchants pay a fee of 2.4% plus $0.31 each time they charge money with Stripe.

An addition to the UK model is a built-in multi-currency facility, which will let businesses charge customers in US Dollars, British pounds, and Euro.

"We’ll automatically handle all the conversions for you and deposit daily into your bank account," Young said.

Young will work as part of an engineering team based in London, away from the Stripe HQ in San Francisco.

"Global presence will make Stripe better for everyone. We’re already at work on the next countries," he added.
