Nigerian mobile software developer MMIT and UK
mobile payment processor Bango have launched an e-wallet to
facilitate payments on social networks and online stores.
M-Content is the first initiative of this kind
in the country and in Africa. It was conceived as a way for
Nigerian users to overcome the difficulties they encounter in
making payments on websites such as Facebook, Skype, iTunes,
Amazon Store and Sony PlayStation.
MMIT Vice President Dayo Adefila said that
Nigerians cannot always purchase online contents because card
transactions from the country are often blocked for security
reasons.
“16 million Nigerians use those sites. But
when they want to make payments, their cards are rejected because
their IPs is not trusted. We want to make it easier for Nigerians
to fully enjoy those services,” Adefila told Electronic Payments
International.
The e-wallet is linked to users’ cards or
mobile money accounts. M-content works as a gateway enabling to
overcome IP obstacles not only in Nigeria but also in the rest of
Africa.
“We partnered with Bango because they are a
global provider and they have already special relationships with
these websites and currency conversion capabilities. The technical
system is already in place,” said Adefila.
