In a bid to ensure its customers stay one step
ahead of online fraudsters, HSBC will provide all its
online-banking customers with a device that creates a unique PIN
code every time they log into their account.
Unlike other approaches seen by rival UK banks
such as Barclays, RBS and Nationwide, the HSBC Secure Key does not
require a bank card to be inserted into the reader to obtain the
one-time PIN.
“By generating a unique code every time you
access your accounts, you can be confident you are the only person
accessing your money,” said Chris Pilling, head of HSBC’s Customer
Security Development.
“Our Secure Key is small and lightweight
enough to keep in your wallet or purse, so you can still do your
banking whenever and wherever you like.”
The device will be issued to all HSBC
customers that register for online banking from 23 March 2011 and
will be rolled out to existing customers over the coming
months.
