Notching up a significant win in
Russia, VeriFone has secured a contract from the largest bank in
Russia, Sberbank, to supply 130,000 payment solutions to its
merchants. Sberbank accounts for about half of total retail
deposits in Russia and a quarter of the country’s total banking
assets.

Emphasising the significance of the
contract, VeriFone general manager for continental Europe Adam
Biedrzycki said: “We triumphed over major competitors to solidify
our relationship with the largest, most dynamic bank of Russia and
Eastern Europe.”

Under the contract Verifone will
supply Sberbank with countertop and wireless payment solutions, as
well as PIN pads. Specifically, Sberbank will deploy Verifone’s Vx
510 dial, Ethernet and GPRS countertop solution, Vx 610 wireless
system, Vx 810 programmable PIN pad and PP1000SE PINpad.

The contract is in addition to
another recently secured by VeriFone under which it supplied
Sberbank with 16,000 of its Vx 810 systems. These systems were
deployed over a three-month period to bank branches for customers
to identify themselves to bank tellers using their credit or debit
card and PINs.

Partnering VeriFone in the Sberbank
contract is Moscow-headquartered INPAS Company, which lays claim to
being the biggest supplier of technology solutions for deploying
acquiring systems in Russia and the other 10 countries that
comprise the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). INPAS is a
unit of Russian diversified technology company INLINE Technologies
Group.

INPAS has been a VeriFone master
distributor in Russia and the CIS since 1995 and has on several
occasions been named by VeriFone as it most rapidly developing
partner worldwide. In 2007, INPAS was also appointed by VeriFone as
its official representative and partner-distributor in Hungary.

In a particularly significant development of VeriFone’s and
INPAS’ activities in Hungary, the partners announced in February
this year that they had been appointed by Hungary’s largest bank,
OTP Bank, to provide payment systems for the country’s first
MasterCard PayPass contactless payments deployment. The product
selected is VeriFone’s PINpad 1000SE, which enables PIN-based and
contactless payments.
