Japan’s QR payment operator PayPay has expanded its alliance with Alipay+ to connect more than three million local merchants to the global payment ecosystem, enhancing e-wallet payment options across Japan.

The partnership allows travellers using Alipay+ payment partner apps to scan PayPay QR codes for payments at various merchant-presented mode (MPM) stores in Japan.

From 20 December 2024 to 10 January 2025, Alipay+ will run a promotional campaign with PayPay merchants.

Users of participating payment partners, including Alipay, AlipayHK, GCash, Kakao Pay, Toss Pay, Touch ‘n Go eWallet, and TrueMoney, will receive a 10% discount (up to JPY 1,000, CNY 50).

Tinaba will offer a 10% cashback promotion (up to EUR 20). Eligible users can redeem the offer once during the campaign period.

Alipay+’s partner payment app network in Japan includes 16 e-wallets and bank apps such as Alipay (Chinese mainland), AlipayHK (Hong Kong SAR China), MPay (Macao SAR China), Kakao Pay, Naver Pay, Toss, OCBC Digital, Changi Pay, EZ-Link, Touch ‘n Go eWallet, MyPB by Public Bank Berhad, GCash, HelloMoney, TrueMoney, Hipay, and Tinaba.

Alipay+ connects over three million merchants, including many SMEs, through its partnership with PayPay. These businesses range from snack shops and anime merchandise stores to guesthouses near Mount Fuji.

Over 20 brands run campaigns with Alipay+, offering discounts to users of Alipay+ partner e-wallets at about 300,000 merchants across Japan, including airport shops, department stores, electronics retailers, health and beauty shops, convenience stores, and premium shopping malls.

It now connects 90 million merchants in 66 countries and regions to 1.6 billion consumer accounts on 35 mobile payment partners.
