Norwegian payments provider Vipps has introduced the Apple Pay alternative for iPhone users.

It is claimed that Vipps has become the first company globally to introduce a competing solution to Apple Pay on the iPhone, also being available on Android devices.

The Vipps payment solution extends to various transactions, enabling users to transfer money.

Initially, the service will cater to customers of SpareBank 1, DNB, and over 40 other savings banks, with plans to expand to more banks in the future.

Vipps is compatible with all card terminals that accept BankAxept cards, covering more than 90% of terminals in Norway.

Plans are on for a expansion of the service, with support for Visa and Mastercard expected in a few months, enabling global payments.

This development follows an agreement between the EU and Apple in July this year, which allows digital wallets like Vipps to be accessible on iPhones.

Last year, Vipps reached out to the European Union for assistance in an antitrust case against Apple.

Vipps MobilePay head Rune Garborg said: “We have fought for a long time to compete on an equal footing with Apple. That’s why it feels almost surreal to finally launch our very own solution. This will now be a rare exciting battle between the world’s strongest brand and Vipps.

“I am incredibly proud of my colleagues who have worked hard to make this happen, and grateful for the good collaboration with BankAxept and Thales”

He further added: “We believe Vipps users find it an advantage to only deal with one payment app, and finally they can use Vipps in situations where they would previously have used their plastic card.

“Now it has been important for us to launch as quickly as possible, in order to meet tough competition. We will add more simplifications, support for international cards and more banks continuously.”
