Nexi Germany, a subsidiary of paytech Nexi Group, has entered a contract with the European Payments Initiative (EPI) to integrate Wero, a European mobile payment system.
The firm has now obtained the licence to connect merchants and service providers for Wero acceptance.
It looks to initiate merchant connections to Wero in the third quarter, following the system’s launch in German e-commerce by mid-year.
Along with its partner Computop, Nexi will facilitate merchants in adopting the new European digital wallet payment method.
Initially targeting e-commerce, the service will eventually expand to include brick-and-mortar retail stores.
Computop, as a gateway provider, will supply the technical interfaces for Wero’s operation, managed by EPI.
Nexi DACH CEO Carola Wahl said: “The Wero payment system, which is based on account-to-account transfers, stands for solutions that we at Nexi are driving forward: intuitive, simple, scalable, and pan-European. As a founding member and shareholder of the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and now also as Wero acquirer Nexi is actively shaping the future of digital payments.”
EPI CEO Martina Weimert stated: “We are looking forward to working with Nexi as an acquirer in the next phase of the Wero rollout in German e-commerce, to increase the acceptance of Wero among online merchants.”
In addition, local payments platform PPRO has secured principal membership with EPI for Wero.
PPRO’s membership will offer its clients various access points to Wero, including sponsored associate membership, payment facilitator access, or as a technical gateway.
Its support for Wero will encompass e/m-commerce and in-store payment flows, with a launch slated for 2025.
These services will be accessible through PPRO’s local payments platform, which allows Payment Service Providers (PSPs) to build scalable payment solutions.
Wero launched in Belgium, France, and Germany, with plans to expand to other European countries soon, supporting P2P payments.
PPRO CEO Motie Bring said: “We are thrilled to be a Principal Member of Wero, providing unparalleled access to Europe’s newest scheme and opening up a key European region for our clients by letting their customers pay the local way.”
Weimert added: “We are happily welcoming this partnership with PPRO, marking a new milestone of our commitment to making payments faster and easier for European merchants and consumers. After the project initiation with peer-to-peer transactions in 2024, we now enter the e/m-commerce functionality roll-out which couldn’t be more exciting.”
