ECB calls for Visa - MasterCard rival

European Central Bank (ECB) executive board member Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell has reinforced her commitment to a third European card scheme to compete with Visa and MasterCard and to ensure the success of the Single Euro Payment Area (SEPA). In a recent speech at the European Financial Management & Marketing Association conference on cards and payments, Tumpel-Gugerell said: In my view, yet another ingredient necessary for the success of SEPA is a new European card scheme

Mellon gift cards pass 5 million mark

Non-banking card sales have hit 5 million for the first time at Mellon Technologies, a Greece-based card solutions provider. The company, whose private label card clients include Carrefour, Adidas, Attica Department Stores, Makro, Avin Oil, and EasyCruise, has sold more than 100 million cards, including those in the banking and wider public sector. Over the past 10 years the company has developed card-based solutions for different sectors in the Greek market, and has contributed to the implementation and support of card-based loyalty and gift card campaigns

MasterCard insists interchange suspension only temporary

MasterCard Europe has announced the temporary suspension of its European cross-border interchange fees to meet a European Commission (EC) deadline. In December 2007, the EC ruled that the interchange fee, which typically makes up around 1 percent of a credit card transaction, was illegal, and told MasterCard to stop levying the charge.

Barclaycard 'to partner with BA'

Barclaycard has signed a major partnership agreement with British Airways allowing it to provide credit cards to British Airways Executive Club customers, Cards International has learned.The agreement strengthens the issuers existing agreement with British Airways in Germany and will be launched in relevant markets later this year. Initial details are sketchy but a source familiar with the deal said it did not include the UK, where British Airways already works with American Express, and is not thought to impact British Airways other working relationships like its partnership with JPMorgan Chase in the US.
