Europe’s payments industry saw a drop of 29.7% in overall deal activity during Q2 2020, when compared to the four-quarter average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 26 deals worth $588.32m were announced for the region during Q2 2020, against the last four-quarter average of 37 deals.
Of all the deal types, venture financing saw most activity in Q2 2020 with 16, representing a 61.5% share for the region.
In second place was M&A with nine deals, followed by private equity deals with one transactions, respectively capturing a 34.6% and 3.9% share of the overall deal activity for the quarter.

The combined value of the top five payments deals stood at $513.8m, against the overall value of $588.32m recorded for the quarter.
The top five payments industry deals of Q2 2020 tracked by GlobalData were:
1) Banca Farmafactoring(formerly Farmafactoring S.p.A.)’s $226.42m acquisition of DEPObank – Banca Depositaria Italiana
2) The $150m venture financing of Checkout by Blossom Capital, Coatue Management, DST Global, Insight Venture Management, Singapore sovereign wealth fund and GIC
3) Bpifrance, IDInvest Partners and Index Ventures’ $78.58m venture financing of Heroku
4) The $35m acquisition of Yandex.Money by Sberbank Rossii
5) Bpifrance, Breega Capital, Large Venture, Serena Capital and Xavier Niel’s venture financing of FX4BIZ for $23.8m.
