Telecom Italia and SIA Group have signed an agreement with three Italian public transport companies to develop and test a mobile ticketing platform.

TPER Transport Passenger Emila-Romagna, ANM Napoli and START Romagna are working with the operators to create a service that will allow smartphone users to purchase, reload and validate tickets directly through their mobile phones.

The system is NFC SIM-based. One of its key components will be the capability to store travel tickets from fraud attempts in a protected area until the time of use.

Telcom Italia intend to integrate its virtual TIM Wallet, eventually allowing customers to transfer and manage on their smartphones all cards currently contained in traditional wallets.

The platform will be open to other public transport companies and local mobile operators, with the testing phase planned to begin in late 2013.
