UnionPay International has selected GHL Cardpay as a direct merchant acquirer for its cards in Malaysia.
GHL has already begun acquiring merchant outlets. It is expected to reach 5,000 merchant outlets this month. The company will enable acceptance of UnionPay card as well as QR Code payments.
UnionPay International started deploying EMV-compliant QR Code for payments in Malaysia in April this year.
The nationwide launch is set to involve several merchants across various sectors. They include retail, food and beverage, tourism, entertainment, hotels and transport areas, among others.
UnionPay International general manager for Southeast Asia Wenhui Yang said: “This is in line with our earlier announcement of enabling QR Code payments locally to support Bank Negara’s vision of a cashless society.
“This also affirms our commitment to bringing innovative payment solutions to Malaysian consumers and businesses to enable greater convenience, security and ease of payment.”
GHL group CEO Danny Leong said: “We are pleased to partner with UPI in enabling Malaysian merchants to add another payment channel to the existing card schemes, debit schemes and various e-wallets.
“Our unique multi-channel acquirer model will enable convenience and cost savings to our merchant base as they will be able to streamline their settlement to a single point and provider.”
UnionPay has facilitated ATM, PoS acceptance and card issuance in all 10 Southeast Asian countries. It is also working with more than 10 partners in Malaysia for domestic acquiring and issuing.
