UnionPay International and the Philippines-based acquirer Metrobank have entered into a partnership, which will allow the bank’s merchants to accept UnionPay cards by the end of September 2017.

Under the partnership, Metrobank merchants, mainly consisting of food-and-beverage merchants and supermarkets, will also support UnionPay contactless mobile payments solution, QuickPass.

UnionPay said that all the point-of-sale (POS) terminals of Metrobank will be enabled to accept UnionPay contactless payment in the Philippines in the future.

The bank has already enabled all of its ATMs to accept UnionPay cards.

China UnionPay president Shi Wenchao said: “Next, we will explore cooperation opportunities in innovative products and services, in order to continue offering safe and flexible mobile payment solutions and jointly improve UnionPay’s service capacity to various groups of customers.”

Currently, UnionPay cards can be used at more than 36 million merchants and two million ATMs across 160 nations and regions.
