US and Canada restaurant chain Tim Hortons has unveiled a new service enabling customers to pay for purchases using their mobile phones.

Payments will be accepted through the restaurateur’s TimmyMe app, leveraging NFC technology to convey transaction details which customers provide via a ‘tap-to-pay’ mechanism on their mobile.

Michelle Robichaud, manager of public relations for Tim Hortons, commented: "Any restaurant that accepts Tim Cards will take the phone payment with BlackBerrys."

According to the company, the system will help make transactions faster and will deduct funds from customers’ pre-charged Tim Hortons account.

David Clanachan, chief operating officer at Tim Hortons, said: "We’re always looking to provide our Tim Hortons guests with the best overall customer experience, and mobile payment is one area that we feel can help streamline the average time spent at the order counter.

"These new innovations offer secure, quick and easy payment alternatives, allowing our guests more time enjoying their favorite food and beverages," he added.

The company has also revealed it has launched a pilot for iPhone and Google Android in 56 of its outlets in the Niagara Region.

With over 3,000 restaurants across Canada and 600 in the US, Tim Hortons is expected to roll-out the service across its branches in 2014.
