Ukraine’s Alfa Bank has teamed up with telco Kyvistar to launch one of the first NFC mobile payment systems in the Eastern European country.

Kyivstar, the Ukrainian business unit of VimpleCom has a customer base of over 25m subscribers and has joined up with Gemalto for the supply of the French firm’s UpTeq multi-tenant SIM embedded software and product.

Philippe Cambriel, Gemalto president for Europe, Mediterranean and CIS stated: "With the boom in contactless equipment at the point of sale in the country, this is the perfect timing for mobile payment introduction."

According to the mobile operator, the joint venture with Alfa Bank will lead the way for a full commercial launch of NFC mobile payments across Ukraine.

Subscribers will have the chance to "tap and go" at an estimated 22,000 contactless terminals in retailers nationwide.

This last development follows the contract won by Kyvistar two years ago to distribute its Optelio NFC stickers through PrivatBank’s Ukranian branch network and at high street retail outlets.
