China-based online payment solution provider Alibaba has extended its online payment platform, Alipay and Taobao Marketplace to Australian merchants.

Alipay Australia, which was initially established as a local entity, will work with a joint venture partner Paybang to help Australian businesses and merchants access their cross-border payment solutions.

Alibaba will also collaborate with Australia Post to sell Alipay Purchase Cards at 4,400 retail outlets to facilitate Australian shoppers buy stuff on Tmall and Taobao.

Alipay, which has presence in South Korea, Singapore, London, Luxembourg, US and Hong Kong, has revealed its plans to open office at Sydney, marking China and Australia’s economic importance to each other.

During the launch of Alipay Australia in Melbourne, Sabrina Peng, president of Alipay International, said: "Australia is an exciting market for e-commerce and cross-border trading opportunities. Chinese consumer needs are evolving and their desire for quality, safe foreign goods have yet to be fully met locally."
