Charging solutions provider Allego has collaborated with Visa, American Express and Mastercard to launch a global contactless card payments scheme for electric vehicle (EV) drivers.
The new scheme will involve co-development of a new certified multi-optional payment standard to allow direct near-field communication (NFC) payments at upgraded Allego chargers.
NFC will enable EV drivers to pay by simply tapping their debit or credit card or other NFC-enabled device, such as a mobile wallet, at the charger’s built-in payment terminal.
The first Allego fast charger with (EMV) NFC technology has been deployed at Shell Holloway in London, UK. Subsequently, the new technology will be rolled out across the Shell Recharge network in the country.
Allego CEO Anja van Niersen said: “The new payment solution at our chargers is essential to offer EV drivers worldwide price transparency. Thanks to the strong collaboration with Visa we could accelerate the deployment of the payment services at our chargers.”
Visa head of merchant services for Europe Hemlata Narasimhan said: “Visa’s mission is to connect the world through the most innovative, reliable and secure payment network so we are delighted to work alongside Allego and Shell to enhance the payment experience for electric vehicle drivers in the UK.
