Amazon Coins have been launched in the UK and Germany, six months after their launch in the US.

Kindle Fire users in both countries will receive 400 ($6.50) free Amazon Coins, worth £4 in the UK and €7.80 in Germany. The coins can be used to buy apps, games or make in-app and in-game purchases.

Mike George, vice president of apps and games at Amazon, said: "Today we are giving Kindle Fire owners £4 worth of Coins to spend on new apps and games, such as Candy Crush Saga and Angry Birds Star Wars.

"We will continue to add more ways to earn and spend Coins on a wider range of content and activities."

Customers not lucky enough to receive the free Coins will have to buy theirs in bulk. Amazon hopes to encourage use of the currency by discounting them according to how many users buy.

A bundle of 500 will cost $7.80, while 1,000 Coins cost $15.40, 2,500 are $37, 5,000 are $72.90 and a whopping 10,000 Coins will set you back $145.70.

Apps and games can still be purchased with existing payment methods.
