Amazon has launched its Amazon Coins, which enable customers in the US to purchase apps, games and in-app items on the Kindle Fire.

To commemorate the launch, the online retailer has deposited 500 Coins ($5 worth) into existing and new Kindle Fire customers Amazon accounts. Customers can receive a discount of up to 10% if they purchase Coins in bulk.

Amazon Appstore developers will still earn their standard 70% revenue share on purchases. This new currency gives developers another opportunity to drive traffic and downloads, and increase monetisation.

Mike George, vice president of apps and games at Amazon, said: "We will continue to add more ways to earn and spend Coins on a wider range of content and activities — today is Day One for Coins."
