Apple has expanded its Tap to Pay on iPhone feature to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), allowing merchants to accept contactless payments directly on their iPhones.

Merchants in the UAE can now accept payments from contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets through a partner-enabled iOS app.

It is compatible with iPhone Xs and later models running the latest iOS version.

At the point of sale, customers can hold their payment device near the merchant’s iPhone to complete the transaction using near field communication (NFC) technology, without the need for additional hardware.

Adyen, Magnati, and Network International are the first payment platforms in the UAE to support this feature.

The service is designed to work with contactless cards from major payment networks such as American Express, Mastercard, and Visa

With Tap to Pay on iPhone, customer payment information is safeguarded by the same privacy and security technology that powers Apple Pay, stated Apple.

Transactions are encrypted and processed using the Secure Element, ensuring privacy as Apple does not track the details of the purchases or the identity of the buyers.

The Tap to Pay on iPhone was initially launched in 2022 across US.

In July this year, Apple committed to grant third-party developers access to NFC technology without fees.

It also agreed to provide access to key iPhone features such as Face ID to competing payment wallets and to allow users to set any wallet as their default option.
