Banco Nacional de Costa Rica (BNCR) has chosen VeriFone’s VX Evolution line of portable EMV and NFC capable point of sale terminals, as part of its plan to improve payment mobility and security for merchants across Costa Rica.
VeriFone believes that BNCR’s migration to VX Evolution terminals will allow its merchants to accept all types of payments, such as traditional mag-stripe as well as EMV and NFC payments.
The bank plans to install 14,000 of VeriFone’s VX Evolution terminals, comprising VX 520, VX 675 and VX 680, annually over the next four years to its installed base of about 32,000 Hypercom terminals.
Banco Nacional de Costa Rica electronic means of payment director Marco Vinicio Calderón said, "Merchants throughout Costa Rica have traditionally only accepted cash instead of card-based payments."
"Now, they want to better serve customers by engaging them in any retail environment and accepting card-based payments as well as emerging forms of payment such as EMV and NFC."
