Bank of Ireland, Ireland's biggest-bank by assets, has launched a new mobile banking service that will enable customers to transfer money from their accounts to other Bank of Ireland customers by using their phone number.

Bank of Ireland, Ireland’s biggest-bank by assets, has launched a new mobile banking service that will enable customers to transfer money from their accounts to other Bank of Ireland customers by using their phone number.

Bank of Ireland said almost 20,000 customers had pre-registered for the mobile-to-mobile service.

Pay to Mobile is currently only available for iPhone users, but an Android version will follow, said the bank.

Gavin Kelly, head of direct channels at Bank of Ireland, said changing customer preferences combined with technological advances had led to the rapid adoption of direct banking channels.

He added: "We want to enable our customers to access banking services through the technologies that they use everyday.

"This new service allows customers to transfer money to friends or family without having to know, or input, their account details."
