Consolidating its leadership in
contactless payments, Barclays Bank’s business customers are
receiving new or re-issued cards incorporating Visa contactless
technology. This move makes the UK bank the first in Europe to
issue contactless debit cards to business customers.

“We work with a large number of
small and medium businesses in the UK, so we have a good
understanding of their day-to-day banking needs,” said Brian
Cunnington, Barclays’ head of debit cards.

He added that introducing
contactless-enabled debit cards to business customers provides an
alternative to payments such as cash and cheques.

Reaffirming confidence in
contactless payments, Marc O’Brien, MD of Visa UK, said rapid
growth in contactless payments is evident.

“We firmly believe that contactless
is the future of payment technology,” said O’Brien. “2010 looks set
to be a major year and we expect millions more customers will be
issued with contactless-enabled cards, with many more retailers
beginning to accept the technology in their outlets.”

Responding to demands from
consumers and retailers, Barclays has also announced an increase in
the limit for contactless transactions from £10 ($15) to £15.

“More than two years after the
first customers were issued with contactless cards it is the right
time for the industry limit to increase to £15,” said
Cunnington.

In 2007 Barclays became the first UK bank to issue contactless
cards and today all cards issued by the bank are
contactless-enabled. Over 6 million people in the UK have a
contactless-enabled Barclays Visa debit card or Barclaycard credit
card.
