CaixaBank has become the first financial institution in Spain to fully develop a mobile point of sale (mPOS) solution.

The bank teamed up with Comercia Global Payments, an electronic transaction service, to create the mPOS system.

Designed for small business owners, it lets merchants collect payments with smartphones and streamline transactions from multiple locations.

CaixaBank said the app would suit professionals on the move, including those doing work in a customer’s home, repair services, home delivery services, and taxi drivers.

The bank said its system was designed for ease of use with minimal technology requirements.

In order to use the solution, customers must download an app to their smartphone and insert their card and into a reader provided by Comercia.

The app – free for customers to download – can be used to enter the amount by selecting the products in a merchant’s electronic catalogue. A purchase receipt is sent to the cardholder by email or text message.

Merchants also receive a receipt of the payment on their smartphone, with the mPOS app updating the commercial catalogue.

CaixaBank is currently the Spanish banking sector’s largest institution by customers, with 13m users and a branch network of 6,000 offices.
