Card4Vend, a commercial network operator, in collaboration with acquiring partner Six Payment Services, has installed Germany’s first unattended contactless-only readers (CORs) for girocard in Berlin.
Girocard is an interbank network and debit card service that virtually links ATMs and banks throughout Germany.
In December 2017, Card4Vend equipped a new self-service laundry at the Schlachtensee student village in Berlin for international debit and credit card acceptance.
With the roll out of the new card readers, around 1,000 residents of the student village can also make payments using their contactless girocard.
Card4Vend managing directors Anne and Arne Meil said: “We are delighted to have a partner like SIX that understands the payments business in Germany and is also a major player in acquiring in Europe.
“This enabled us to achieve our goal of being the first provider to equip unattended solutions with CORs.”
According to SIX Payment, one year post the launch of girocard in Germany, approximately 50% of the country’s girocard terminals and 35 million cards have been equipped for contactless transactions.
The company further added that merchants as well as customers benefit from such easy, fast payments with enhanced security and convenience.
This year, Card4Vend and Six Payment Services are planning to install additional CORs in and around the German Banking Industry Committee’s pilot region, Kassel, and at other interested locations.
