The Chinese embassy in Nepal has started accepting UnionPay QR code payment.
This will enable Chinese citizens to use the UnionPay mobile app and scan the UnionPay QR code to make payments for consular services.
The latest move expands UnionPay acceptance at Chinese embassies and consulates to 36 countries.
UnionPay is already accepted in Chinese embassies and consulates in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Spain, the UAE, Greece, Russia, Thailand, Kenya, Norway, Sweden, Finland and South Korea, among others.
Nepal reported an influx of around 150,000 Chinese tourists last year. China is currently ranked as Nepal’s second-largest tourist source country with UnionPay card the key payment method of Chinese travellers.
At present, tens of thousands of merchants in Nepal accept UnionPay QR code.

By GlobalData“With this new partnership, the “UnionPay” mobile application becomes another payment option supported by Chinese embassy in Nepal in addition to cash, and therefore allows Chinese citizens to make payments by scanning UnionPay QR codes at the embassy, enjoying a better experience without the need for currency exchange and change making,” UnionPay noted.
Notably, UnionPay obtained payment systems operator (PSO) licence in Nepal last July. The Chinese payments firm became the first international company to receive a PSO licence from the Nepal Rastra Bank.
“Now, Nepalese residents who apply for a Chinese visa at the Chinese embassy in Nepal may sign up for a UnionPay virtual card in their local e-wallet “Qpay Nepal” and make payment by scanning UnionPay QR codes,” UnionPay said.
