The Commercial Bank of Qatar (CBQ) has unveiled plans to launch approximately 200,000 contactless cards in the country by the end of 2018.
The latest move follows the bank’s successful launch of contactless debit card and acquiring acceptance in November last year.
After that, the bank boosted the contactless acquiring capability of its merchant network which enabled CBQ to ensure a seamless and secure contactless transaction experience for its credit card customers.
Additionally, the bank revealed plans to install more than 5000 terminals capable of accepting contactless cards at the leading retail chains in Qatar by the end of this year.
Contactless cards do not require a PIN, which makes it a fast, easy and secure way to pay by simply touching the card on a reader.
Commercial Bank Group CEO Joseph Abraham said: “Commercial Bank’s new contactless payment feature is part of our value proposition to our customers and to support the Government’s efforts to encourage cashless payments in Qatar.
“As a leader in innovation, Commercial Bank aims to introduce new contactless payment options that will transform consumer experiences and contribute to developing a vibrant contactless payments environment in Qatar; this will also provide contactless convenience experience when our clients travel abroad so they have a seamless contactless payment experience both in Qatar and during their international travels.”
