Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) has bagged a contract from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) to develop an integrated mobile app in support of the TAP regional smart card payment system.
The app would serve as a virtual TAP card, allowing commuters to tap and pay with a smartphone on vehicles operated by the 24 transit agencies accepting TAP cards.
The app will also enable riders to use TAP account balances for third-party services including ride or bike sharing, parking and fare subsidy programmes.
Cubic will also deliver a merchant app for retailers selling and loading fare products on TAP cards. The app will offer access to the TAP product catalogue as well as enable retailers to select from available pass types and stored value amounts.
Metro executive officer David Sutton said: “This is an exciting time for the TAP programme, because with the addition of new apps and connecting features, customers will be able to get the latest commute information, make a fare purchase, use their mobile device as a TAP card and complete their journey using transit, bikeshare or other multi-modal programmes.”
