Canadian e-commerce firm Shopify has integrated its payments platform Shopify Payments with Google Pay to ramp up the checkout process.

The integration is in response to the increasing amount of mobile traffic to online stores using Shopify.

Google Pay, which offers a mobile-first design, allows Android users with their credit or debit card data stored on Chrome to check out through a single click.

All Shopify merchants using the firm’s payments platform Shopify Payments can gain access to the Google app.

Shopify general manager of financial services Mohammad Hashemi said: “When shoppers encounter a lot of friction on a mobile device, they’re more likely to abandon their carts. Shopify is always looking for ways to arm our merchants with tools to provide the best customers experiences, and by enabling Google Pay across our entire platform, we are helping our merchants tackle one of the toughest challenges in the industry – cart abandonment.

“With Google Pay, customers globally will experience a frictionless checkout process on Shopify stores, generating more sales for our merchants.”

In February this year, Google merged its various payment services including Android Pay and Google Wallet and rolled out a unified payment app, Google Pay.
