The European Payments Council (EPC) has
criticised the European Commission’s (EC) antitrust investigation
of it development of e-payment standards.
The EC is investigating whether the
standardisation of online payments could alienate new entrants or
service providers from the e-payments market.
Gerard Hartsink, chair of EPC, believes that
these allegations are unfounded. He said:
“The EPC is continuously providing full and
transparent information available to all stakeholders, including
the European Commission, on the EPC’s activities.”
“Inconsistencies between the European
Commission’s objectives continue to hamper the SEPA progress,” he
continued.
The EPC are working towards a SEPA e-Payment Framework which
seeks to facilitate e-payments across the EU. It will enable
interoperability between existing and new e-payment schemes that
make SEPA-wide credit transfers.
