European Payment Council (EPC), which provides SEPA Proxy Lookup (SPL) scheme, has extended its partnership with equensWorldline to offer central SPL service.
The service supports the interoperability between existing European mobile P2P payment services. It was launched in 2019 to enhance the user experience for P2P money transfers across Europe.
The service allows customers to use their mobile devices to transfer money from their payment account across Europe without manually exchanging payment details, including IBAN and beneficiary name.
In place of such personal information, the service allows aliases such as mobile phone number and most recently, e-mail address.
The service will now allow users to search for an alias in the current proxy network. This feature will help new customers to find their existing personal contacts who are participating in the same payment network.
These new features are designed to enhance the user experience and is expected to extend the customer reach of the available domestic or closed-loop P2P schemes.

equensWorldline CEO Michael Steinbach said: “With the usage of such a central proxy lookup service, the user experience and security of person-to-person payments significantly improves. Furthermore, it will strongly support the usage of request-to-pay messages to improve the conversion rate for beneficiaries.”
EPC director general Etienne Goosse added that harmonisation, competition and innovation in Europe are key to develop a dynamic pan-European payment ecosystem.
Goosse said: “The EPC has established the SPL scheme to facilitate European cross-border P2P payments.
“In this process, equensWorldline has been a reliable and innovative partner during the service implementation and participated actively in the continuous improvement of the service.”
In 2017, ACI Worldwide, the parent of equensWorldline, added support for the EPC SEPA Instant rulebook to allow payment service providers connect to any domestic or pan-European EPC-based instant payments scheme.
