Swedish biometrics firm Fingerprint Cards has joined hands with payment technology firm Valid to launch contactless biometric payment cards.

The card, comprising Fingerprints’ T-Shape module, can be customised so that it can be incorporated into smartcards using standard processes.

The Swedish card company noted that the launch of the ultra-low-power consuming biometric payment cards will provide countless benefits to banks, consumers and merchants and encourage them to adopt contactless payment solutions.

Commenting on the collaboration, Fingerprints senior vice president of business line smartcards Thomas Rex said: “Valid is an innovator in the global market for secure payments, and an especially strong player in the US and Latin America regions.

“We are excited about this collaboration and to see our outstanding T-Shape now being integrated into all top five payment smartcard suppliers globally.”

Valid US Region COO Alberto Hernandez stated: “We chose the biometric solution from Fingerprints since they have the leading technology in the market, with proven biometric performance and the lowest power consumption, which is of highest importance for contactless biometric cards.”

Valid is one of the top 10 manufacturers of banking cards across the globe. It is the largest issuer of identification documents in Brazil as well as the fifth largest producer of SIM cards worldwide.
