Users of the Ventra card on the Chicago Transit Authority have complained that their Chase debit cards are being charged instead.
The reports are only the latest of a series of glitches to hit the beleaguered contractor. Customers have previously complained of similar problems, but the glitch is particularly worrying this time because some of the cards affected do not usually work without a PIN.
CTA spokeswoman Tammy Chase suggested fault lay with Chase end, rather than the CTA or that Ventra. She said: “The vendor says the issuing bank sets the rules for which environments it will allow the card to be used.
“The issuing bank, Chase, sets the protocols for what kinds of transactions would require a PIN and not.”
Chase’s Christine Holevas hit back, referring to previous glitches on the Ventra machines. She said: “Chase is aware of some instances when Ventra machines have debited other cards with (Chase’s) blink technology when customers tapped their wallet to debit their Ventra card.
“We are working with Ventra to fix this issue.”
