Ensuring itself a leading position
in mobile authentication, Dutch digital security specialist Gemalto
has acquired Valimo Wireless, a Finnish company that has to its
credit the world’s largest deployment in this emerging field of
payments security.
Gemalto’s CEO, Olivier Piou, said: “Mobile
digital signature has been on the horizon for a few years and we
believe that we have now reached a tipping point.”
Valimo offers a two-channel, two-factor
authentication solution based on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)
combining an over-the-air platform with its software client (VMAC)
in a mobile phone’s SIM to generate a legally binding electronic
signature.
The solution enables mobile phone users to
authenticate themselves, digitally sign documents and confirm
legally binding transactions by entering a pass-phrase or PIN.
In a typical application of the solution such
as confirming a payment transaction on an online bank, the customer
presses the “Confirm” button on the online bank and in seconds a
message appears on their mobile phone’s screen stating details of
the transaction for verification.
If correct, the customer presses “OK”, enters
his or her PIN when prompted and then after few seconds the bank
confirms that the transaction is in order. The bank also sends a
confirmation message to the customer’s mobile phone.

By GlobalDataThe largest deployment of Valimo’s solution is
in Turkey where, since February 2007, it has been offered by the
country’s largest mobile network operator Turkcell.
The solution, Mobil Imza, is the world’s
largest mobile digital signature deployment and is used by 13 banks
and some 70 other users, including governmental agencies.
Commenting on deployments such as Mobil Imza,
Valimo’s CEO Juha Murtopuro stressed that the key ingredient in a
successful mobile PKI launch is bringing together mobile operators,
banks and governmental agencies.
