Indian government has introduced a new mobile payment app, called Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) that will allow users to make transaction using thumb impression.

Developed by the National Payments Council of India (NPCI), the unified payment interface (UPI)-based payment solution will facilitate retail banking operations, including transfer of money and checking balance.

Speaking on the sidelines of DigiDhan Mela in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the app will be common across all the financial institutions and users can seamlessly transact funds without using credit or debit card, or by creating and storing a mobile wallet.

BHIM app, which can be used on both smartphone and feature phones without internet connectivity, will allow users to make transaction just using a phone number.

To make purchases, customers will have to enter their Aadhaar Number (UID) and choose the bank on vendors’ smartphone. The transaction will be then confirmed using customer’s fingerprint.

If the shopkeeper uses BHIM app, customers can simply select 'send money' option on their app and type in the amount and the vendors phone number to complete the transaction.
