French bank LCL, owned by Crédit Agricole, has partnered with Gemalto to allow its customers to get their PIN codes by text message.

The service, known as Allynis, is part of Gemalto’s Netsize platform, which has deals with over 160 mobile operators to ensure message delivery.

"LCL recognizes the mobile channel as a new opportunity to support their continued drive to optimise card activation rates and be the top-of-wallet choice for payment," said Philippe Cambriel, president for Gemalto Europe.

"Enabling cardholders to get their PIN code on their mobile phone prompts them to start using their banking card as soon as they receive it."

Gemalto says the service reduces the risk of fraud introduced by the traditional method of mailing PIN codes, is more eco-friendly and offers cardholders who forget their numbers the option of reminders by SMS.

The company says the service also encourages customers to start using their payment cards straight away.

Similar services include First Data’s PIN Now, which enables delivery of a debit, credit or prepaid card PIN to the cardholder’s registered mobile phone in real-time.

The PIN is sent via a text message, following a customer request which is password-authenticated to provide an extra layer of security.

In April, British company Thinkmoney announced the deployment of First Data’s PIN Now SMS platform across its 120,000 cardholder base.

Thinkmoney says it can now deliver PINs to its customers in about 40 seconds after their authentication.

LCL, formerly known as Crédit Lyonnais, was the biggest bank in the world at the turn of the 20th century.

After being taken over in 2003, the lender now serves over 6.3m retail banking customers from 2,000 branches across France, both owned by and in competition with Crédit Agricole.
