Mastercard has enabled TriMet commuters to add a card bought through the Hop Fastpass App to iPhone or Apple Wallet and tap their devices to get on board public transportation.

An alliance between Mastercard and Apple has enabled TriMet commuters in Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington to add a digital Hop Fastpass card to their Apple Watch or iPhone.

TriMet, the region’s major transit provider, enabled acceptance of contactless bank cards, credit cards and debit cards in Apple wallet by all Hop electronic fare card readers.

With this facility, riders need not have to wait at a ticket machine or visit a store to purchase a pass.

Mastercard estimates that ever since TriMet enabled this facility, Portland has seen elimination of 210,000 daily car trips, which in turn saved congestion expenses by over $150m.

Mastercard EVP for merchants and acceptance in US Linda Kirkpatrick said: “This is a fast-paced world and it’s important that we enable cities to keep pace with their commuters.

“We’re thrilled to bring our technology to solve new problems, and by doing so hope to take some of the frustration out of the daily commute.”

TriMet general manager Doug Kelsey said: “TriMet has long been a leader in the transit industry, focused on the customer experience and ways to simplify riding transit.

“With Hop Fastpass, the first transit fare card in the US to launch in Apple Wallet, riders in the Portland-Vancouver area can simply tap-and-go by holding their iPhone or Apple Watch near a Hop a reader.”

Mastercard has been developing flexible transit solutions by partnering with cities, technological companies and transit agencies.
