Mastercard has introduced a new technology advancement that is set to facilitate remote registration of fingerprints for biometric cards, thereby eliminating the need for customers to visit a bank branch.
The new battery-powered sleeve is intended to offer an easy and convenient experience for Mastercard biometric cardholders, who will be able to self-enrol their contact or contactless card at home.
Customer fingerprints are scanned by the sensor present on the cards, and are then digitally encrypted into a template and securely stored for cross-verification during transactions.
Mastercard executive vice-president of identity solutions Bob Reany said: “Making life safer and simpler for consumers is the cornerstone of our efforts around biometrics and comes through the use of some incredibly sophisticated technology.
“People love the security our biometric card delivers because we put their needs first. The card draws power from the payment terminal so it can be used anywhere, we use a flexible biometric scanner so it’s more durable, and now we have a sleeve to register fingerprints so people don’t have to make a trip to a bank branch.”
The company expects that the new cost-effective feature will drive adoption of biometrics by both issuers and consumers.
