MasterCard has teamed up with Orient Bank to expand the acceptance of its payment cards at ATMs and point-of-sale (POS) terminals across Uganda.
The agreement will facilitate the acceptance of payment cards at 23 ATMs and 200 POS terminals in the country with immediate effect.
Besides local consumers, the move will be beneficial for tourists visiting Uganda as they will be able to pay and draw for money using their MasterCard at ATMs and POS terminals.
MasterCard vice president and area business head for East Africa Chris Bwakira said: “The focus on acceptance and easy-to-access solutions is key to driving financial inclusion in Uganda.
“Uganda is of immense strategic importance to MasterCard and we will continue to invest in infrastructure to enable safe and secure payment options.”
MasterCard said that the partnership aims to successfully integrate Uganda into the global financial system. It is also directly in line with Bank of Uganda’s Strategic Plan 2012 to 2017 to improve financial inclusion through innovation.
