Zimbabwe’s mobile network operator NetOne has
teamed up with digital security provider Gemalto to offer its
unbanked customers a mobile money transfer service – ‘OneWallet’.
The OneWallet service allows NetOne
subscribers to make P2P payments, pay bills and top-up prepaid
phone cards. In a bid to ‘empower the unbanked’ the platform will
also allow users to have their salaries paid directly onto their
mobile phones.
NetOne also plans work with the Government of
Zimbabwe and Pension Fund schemes to allow the OneWallet service to
be used for pension payments.
“NetOne will bring banking services to even
the most remote areas in Zimbabwe,” said Philippe Vallée, EVP for
Gemalto.
“We look forward to supporting NetOne in their
efforts to revolutionise Zimbabweans’ everyday lives in this and
other future innovative projects.”
Gemalto’s LinqUs solution provides the server,
user application and system integration services to power the
OneWallet solution.
