Google Pay has announced that New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will offer the ‘pay per ride’ feature with Google Pay, starting 31 May.

The public pilot, which will be rolled out at certain subway stations and Staten Island buses, expands the number of public transit authorities that accept Google Pay.

Google Pay can be availed at all Staten Island buses and subway stations along the 4-5-6 lines between Grand Central and Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center.

Using the payment service on MTA forms part of a contactless payment fare system called OMNY, which allows tap-and-go with contactless payment card, mobile phone or wearable.

Google noted that its service eliminates the need for carrying a MetroCard and doesn’t share the original card number while paying.

A statement from the tech giant read: “Using Google Pay to ride with your phone is simple. No need to open the app or unlock your device-and it’s the same price as a single ride MetroCard. Plus, it’s more secure.”

In addition, the company has worked with the MTA to add a new real-time transit feature to its Google Assistant, which will provide information on a train’s schedule and also walking directions to the station.

Furthermore, Google Maps will be updated to enable viewing of routes that will accept Google’s payment service .

The Google Pay/Google Maps feature is scheduled for global roll out in the coming weeks. The destinations that will get the feature include Melbourne’s myki transit system, the New York City area’s MTA and London’s TfL.
